Recent remarks by Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to disarm the terrorist group, have welcomed regional and international actors, according to Mehr News Agency.

Accordingly, UN Secretary -General Stephen Dujarik welcomed Ocalan's remarks to disarm the Kurdistan Workers' Party.

“UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres welcomed the remarks of Ocalan and supports the PKK disarmament,” he said. This can settle a long -term conflict in the region through peacefulness.

“Ocalan's remarks create a light of hope for ending a long conflict in the region that caused pain and suffering on civilians,” Dujanik added.

Clashes between the PKK militants and the Turkish central government began in the 1980s. The Kurdistan Workers' Party had a communist thinking and sought the independence of the eastern Kurdish regions of Türkiye. Since then, conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead and injured.

Iraq's welcome to Abdullah Ocalan's statement

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry issued a statement: “We welcome the request of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party to abandon weapons, and consider it a positive and important step in achieving stability in the region.”

Iraq, which is witnessing the presence of Kurdistan in the northern part, has always been exposed to Ankara because of Türkiye's allegations of cooperating with Iraqi Kurds.

Baghdad hopes to return to the northern regions of the country by resolving the issue of the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
