Citizens' need for new buses exceeds domestic production capacity

The CEO of Tehran Bus Company emphasized the importance of public transport in reducing air pollution and improving security and savings in energy and time.

Referring to the status of the bus fleet before the beginning of the sixth period of the urban management, Qayyum said: Prior to this period, the number of buses active in the city lines had decreased to less than 5 units. But over the past three years, with the efforts and support of the Tehran municipality, the number of buses has increased to about 5 units.

“We are still far from the desired point,” he said. According to studies, to achieve a sustainable transport in Tehran, 2 to 6,000 buses need to be reduced to reduce the interval between buses in accordance with world standards and increase the use of public transport in the city.

“Unfortunately, our need did not match the capacity of domestic production,” Qayyum said, referring to meetings with domestic carmakers to increase bus production capacity. We hope that one day we will achieve this, but until then, we have to move towards electricity in the public transport fleet to meet the needs of the citizens and coordinate with the technologies.

He also announced the efforts of domestic manufacturers to build electric buses and said: “The prototype of these buses was produced domestically and this process is being pursued seriously.” Tehran Bus Branch Company will also utilize all internal capacity to develop electric fleets.
